Delivering Expertise to Aid Pakistan’s Wind Evolution

100 MW

Appointed as Independent Engineer

 Located in Gharo

Pakistan is in the exciting early stages of its wind evolution, with wind energy capacity forecast to increase by more than five percent between 2020 and 2025. With the growing support brought via new government policy, alongside the declining costs of renewable technologies, clean energy is now able to compete in price with fossil fuel sources.

For Pakistan, this is promising news in light of its renewable electricity generation target. The government is aiming for 30 percent of the country’s electricity generation to come from renewable sources by the end of 2030. And, according to the United Stages Agency for International Development, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pakistan’s land geography makes it a prime candidate for wind energy development. Both organisations estimate that there is potential for Pakistan to develop more than 132GW of wind energy.

Yet despite the huge renewable energy potential the country has, it still faces challenges in the form of skills gaps and a lack of infrastructure. It’s a problem developers are having to overcome, and many are partnering with experienced wind energy teams including K2 Management. To date, K2 Management has advised on several successful, large scale wind projects in the country, sharing unique expertise and its global insights to successfully navigate - and maximise - Pakistan’s wind energy potential.

In 2022, K2 Management was appointed as Independent Engineer to two Liberty Wind projects in Pakistan - Liberty 1 and Liberty 2 - which have a combined capacity of 100MW and are the brainchild of local utility Central Power Purchasing Authority (CPPA). With a duty to ensure the project was compliant with network and grid requirements as it neared completion, the K2 Management team drew on its existing approval from the Pakistani government to represent utilities in this way. In fact, K2 Management’s successful track record and existing strong relationships in the region have brought several key wind energy projects through the development stages.

Prior to Liberty 1 and Liberty 2, K2 Management worked as Owner’s Engineer to Artistic Milliners, the organisation behind the 50MW Artistic Wind Energy Project in Jhimpir, Pakistan. As Owner’s Engineer, the team delivered full technical advisory throughout the construction phase of the project, with the scope of the work including the review of detailed engineering and design, project management and site supervision during the 16-month EPC execution period. The project was connected to the grid in early 2022 following its reliability tests and is now among the first from the “Super 6” International Finance Corporation (IFC) financed projects to commence commercial operations.

Alongside these projects, K2 Management has also delivered asset management support to the operational Zephyr Wind (Pvt.) Ltd., 50 MW project located in Gharo. It is one of many projects where K2 Management has supported to fill the skills gaps in the local market. In response, we deployed specialists with experience on the turbines used in the project, all to perform a thorough audit of the O&M procedures in place.

“Pakistan is a market with big potential – especially in the Jhimpir-Gharo Corridor,” shares Patrick Architta, President, Projects Asia at K2 Management. “We’re delighted to have played a central role in the development of these early projects in the country’s growing wind industry, helping developers to overcome challenges and to start generating clean energy. We are building a depth of knowledge which we can take into future projects and our track-record not just in Pakistan, but in other territories around the world, means we are well positioned and actively helping accelerate the profitable expansion of wind in Pakistan.”

K2M’s work on these projects demonstrates the important role it is playing in Pakistan’s rapidly growing wind industry, collaborating with its local partner Ray Analytics to support developers and owners to scale-up clean energy capacity in the country.

We look forward to even greater collaboration with leading developers and experts in the Pakistan region in the coming years.

Ray Analytics

"The collaboration between the local resources of Ray Analytics and international expertise of K2M has been a great success. We are confident that this collaboration will be very helpful for the coming competitive auctions where experience in optimization of projects will be a key differentiation for winning developers.”
