Earlier this year, we were engaged by Encavis AG, a leading European Independent Power Producer (IPP), to serve as Owner’s Engineer for the final construction phase of the 30MW Illevaara onshore wind farm in Finland.

This project, located in the remote Kainuu region, posed unique challenges due to harsh winter conditions and complex logistical requirements. The wind farm is expected to generate 98 GWh of clean electricity annually, contributing significantly to Finland's renewable energy goals.

There were many challenges due to the wind farm's remote location and the harsh climate conditions. Furthermore, the project features five Vestas V162-6.0 MW turbines, some of the largest onshore wind models in the world, requiring highly specialized technical expertise.

We were appointed under the Turnkey Installation Agreement (TIA) and Turbine Supply Agreement (TSA) to provide technical oversight during the final stages of construction, ensuring a smooth transition to the operational. Our tasks included, takeover process management, technical oversight, and stakeholder coordination.

We had already been involved in the due diligence process during Encavis’s acquisition of the wind farm, which allowed them to leverage insights gained during the project’s earlier stages.

Cristina Fernández, European Sales Director, at K2M said: “Onshore wind is making a meaningful contribution to Finland’s energy transition, but bringing online projects in remote regions with harsh weather conditions continues to pose unique challenges for developers and operators, particularly as the next generation of larger turbines come into play. The Encavis team has proven itself highly adept at managing these risks across its Nordic portfolio and we are proud to be able to play a part in that at Illevaara.”

Mario Schirru, CIO/COO of Encavis AG, said: “Having invested into now a second wind farm in Finland, we are dedicated in continuing this momentum as the country works to significantly increase its wind power capacity, which is expected to generate about 100 terawatt hours (TWh) of annual onshore wind by 2040. The acquisition of the Illevaara wind farm last year contributed to acquiring 1 TWh of additional renewable electricity production in 2023 as part of ENCAVIS’ Accelerated Growth Strategy 2027, and we’re excited to enter the final phase of this project.”

“K2M has supported us with the acquisition Due Diligence for the Illevaara project and is continuing this during the construction phase bringing extensive experience from global markets to navigate the challenging climate conditions of the region. Technical insights in this highly specialised area have been instrumental in ensuring the project’s smooth execution and we are glad to have them on board.”
